AIN (Assistant in Nursing) — Cert III. EN (Enrolled Nurse) — Diploma of Nursing. RN (Registered Nurse) — Bachelor of Nursing, then AHPRA registration.
The clinical ladder
RN → Clinical Nurse / Senior RN → Clinical Nurse Specialist → Clinical Nurse Consultant → Nurse Practitioner (with endorsement and Masters-level study).
The leadership ladder
RN → Associate NUM → Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) → Nursing Director / Director of Nursing → Executive Director of Nursing.
Specialisation
Most RNs specialise within 3–5 years — ED, ICU, theatre, oncology, mental health, paediatrics, midwifery, community. Specialisation typically lifts earning power and broadens career options.
